Who are they – brothers and sisters Chekhov, Kataev and other famous writers who worked under pseudonyms

Not always talented relatives have the same name. Even siblings can have completely different surnames. In the writer’s world, there are many cases where readers were not even aware that two different authors grew up in the same family.

Evgeny Petrov, Valentin Kataev

Many people love and “the Twelve chairs”, and “lone White sail”, but not the connection between these two works. And the connection, though not direct, is — they were written by brothers, Evgeny Petrov (in co-authorship with Ilya Ilf) and Valentin Kataev. The real name that is both Katayevy, but Eugene decided to take a pseudonym to avoid confusion with his brother.

The age difference between the brothers was five years, but this has not prevented them to do things together. Here is and literature they, too, have bought into both — and both have become famous, at least, on homeland. By the way, later become a writer and son of Valentine, Paul. He wrote several children’s stories and plays for the puppet theater.

Their lives were very different. Valentin Petrovich was married three times, spied on the white guards during the post-revolutionary events, was friends with Bunin and considered him his teacher. During the war, became a war correspondent; seen things, which resulted in the light of his novels, “Son of regiment”, and in the future multi-day binges. He founded the magazine “Youth”, and he lived almost to ninety years.

Eugene also worked as a front-line correspondent and died in this post — the plane on which he was flying, shot down by the Germans. Many noted his extraordinary tact, decency and humanity. To his only wife Valentina treated very tenderly. Perhaps his tragic death was among the reasons that led to drinking Valentine Kataev.

Between these two women, it would seem, there can be nothing in common. Hum Russian émigré and coquette taffy, the star of Russian emigration, and the poet who actually paved the way for women in the Silver age of Russian poetry — Myrrh: how different their roles and roles are! But they were sisters, and their names were Nadezhda and Maria. Mary (myrrh’s real name) was the eldest.

Wrote girls both from his youth and then, in his youth, agreed that the first will be the famous one Lokhvitskaya, and then instead, it’s another to, so to speak, on Olympus, not to push. But in the end the younger sister decided that it is easier to take the nickname, and was just taffy.

Myrrh survived the incredible popularity and died young, from angina pectoris, and before her long tormented severe depression. Taffy lived a long life. She was a nurse at the front during the First world war, went abroad after the revolution, there she made herself documents with another, much younger than in fact, age, wrote stories and twisted novels. During world war II starved, if only not to cooperate with collaborationist publications (and others after the occupation in Paris was not). Died in eighty years.

Children who read magazines like “Koster” and “Chizh” knew the work of not only the famous children’s poet Samuel Marshak, but also his sister Elena Ilyina (real name — Leia Marshak), who was a regular author of several children’s magazines. Many loved the books that popularize science and technological progress for the young reader, which was signed “M. Ilyin” – it was the brother of Samuel Yakovlevich Ilya Marshak, in fact the founder of his genre. Leah and Elijah took the same alias as each other’s competition not seen — but the threat to remain in the shadows most famous of Marshakov was real.
I must say that one of the most famous children’s poets in the USSR twice suffered parental misfortune. As a result of the accident, his one-year-old daughter Nata died from burns. Both sons survived to adulthood, but one died very young from tuberculosis.
In the family of Chekhov’s writer was not only Anton Pavlovich — although he, without a doubt, was the most talented. Alexander and Mikhail Chekhov also wrote. And initially aliases used all three brothers, and each had several.

So, stories of Anton Pavlovich could be signed “Chekhonte”, “Brother my brother”, “Man without a spleen”, Alexander Pavlovich — “Agatopol Edinitsy”, “Aloe”, “A. Gray”, Mikhail Pavlovich — “M-sky”, “Maxim Holyavu”, “Captain cook”. According to some reports, each of the three brothers suffered from periods of depression and each died after a debilitating illness. Anton Pavlovich suffered from tuberculosis, Alexander Pavlovich — throat cancer, and the exact diagnosis of Mikhail Pavlovich is unknown — he died in exile.

Need to say, and their brothers-sister, and their descendants proved very talented: among Chekhov were actors and artists. Mikhail Chekhov’s wife became a movie star in the Third Reich and there are still rumors that she worked for Soviet intelligence.

Aliases writers took not only because of the famous relatives. 15 famous writers, whose real names few people remember, looked back at very different circumstances.
