Doubtful love affair of Sergei Yesenin: Who were the patrons and admirers of the “singer of the people»
Critics and admirers called Sergei Yesenin “peasant son” and “a singer from the people.” He gravitated to the high society, posing as the aristocrat, wore English suits, loved fancy things, expensive perfume, but the despised people of high society in the best rural traditions. To success he walked a thorny road, and many of his contemporaries (and, perhaps, detractors) claimed that helped the blue-eyed handsome man with blond tufts of very ambiguous connection.
How it all began
Yesenin is 20 years old. In Moscow, no one publishes it, for this reason, he left his young wife with a child and went to look for happiness in Petrograd. In the Northern capital of his poems read the Block itself. He liked the poems, and he gave the young talent a letter of recommendation to Sergei Gorodetsky – a man who gladly ran through the young poets. It was no secret that Gorodetsky was bisexual, and his circle of friends were people of non-traditional orientation. Of course, the handsome Yesenin made a lasting impression on him.
Gorodetsky not only helped the young Yesenin promote his literary work in St. Petersburg magazines, but also invited him to live. It is thanks to this acquaintance that the poet became a regular of St. Petersburg poetry salons, including such famous as the Merezhkovsky salon.
Nikolai Klyuev is a famous poet with an unconventional orientation of that era and another patron of Sergei Yesenin. To the latter he experienced passion rampant. What remained documentary evidence. In letters to Yesenin Klyuev writes him different tenderness, calls diminutive-affectionately: “bright brother”, “my white pigeon”, “kiss you… in your cute mustache.”
And I have a new hut —
The shelf with valance, Shrine unquenchable,
Piled up from poglavica ardent words I
You, my friend, bird is my favorite!
N. Klyuev, “Crying about Sergei Yesenin»
Literally from the moment of acquaintance with Yesenin Klyuev does not want to leave him for a minute. He put the young poet in his own house, introduced in the most famous literary salons, has managed to ensure that Yesenin not drafted into the army – the protection was limitless.
Sergei Yesenin wrote to his friend Vladimir Chernavsky: “As soon as I’m behind the hat, he is on the floor, sitting in the middle of the room and howling at the top of his voice in a woman: do not go, do not dare to go to her!”And in the memories of the Chernavsky, you find that Klyuyev “has completely subdued our Cerhonice”, “belt tying him, stroking hair, watching eyes.”
Sergey Yesenin himself did not share Klyuev’s enthusiastic feelings. As only managed to achieve recognition, is gone from its patron. Klyuev was grieving, and dedicating poems to the infidel and ungrateful favorite.
Anatoly Mariengof admirers Esenina and today is called “the wicked Yesenin’s devil.” Needless to say, the relations of the two were therefore complex, deep and very conflicted. And yet there was a great friendship behind them.
After the meeting, they began to live in one house in a 3-room apartment next to the korsha theater in Bogoslovsky lane – everything they had in common. They woke up together, ate together, walked and even dressed alike. All this added fuel to the fire when it came to latent bisexuality and a craving for the tender male friendship of Yesenin.
When Marienhof decided to marry Anna Nikritina, an actress of the Chamber theatre, Yesenin was very worried and jealous. And that’s when he had an affair with Isadora Duncan.
In the poem “Farewell to Marienhof” Yesenin almost breaks into hysterics:
There is in friendship happiness frenzied
And a spasm of violent feelings –
Fire melts the body,
Like a stearin candle.
My beloved! give me your hands –
I’m not used to it., –
I want to wash them in the hour of separation
I am a yellow foam head.
Goodbye, goodbye. The lunar fire
Not ripen me joyful days,
But all OK middle quivering and young
You were the best for me.
There were at them quarrels, there was misunderstanding and a gap for years. But in fact, their friendship knew neither time nor distance nor death – poets carried it through life. This friendship became for them both a huge gift, and a heavy cross.
December 30, 1925, when the coffin of Sergei Yesenin arrived in Moscow, to say goodbye to him came all who knew him and loved. These days Anatoly Marienhof wrote a poem full of pain and bitterness
My Golden maple!
There is a worm,
There is death,
Decay is there.
How could you believe self-serving
These words became a farewell Mariengof Yesenin.
In the life of Sergei Yesenin had a lot of novels. That’s just saying that on normal women, it “curly blue-eyed boy” makes for some reason seems repulsive. He liked the ladies hysterical and creative, such as Reich Duncan, and those who shot at his grave.
