A famous writer, Nobel prize winner in literature led a modest, almost reclusive life. He spent his bonuses, as they would say, on charity, and he was not afraid of the high authorities, preferring to honestly Express his position even to Joseph Stalin. However, the writer’s life at one time hung in the balance. Who and what was the famous attempt on Mikhail Sholokhov.
Even during the life of the writer periodically appeared stories about how the young Misha Sholokhov miraculously escaped from the hands of the merciless Nestor Makhno. Mikhail Sholokhov himself did not comment on these stories, but did not refute them. The path of movement of the insurgent army of Makhno in the South of Russia makes this meeting quite probable. All the more, that leaks about it emerged with enviable regularity.
At that time 15-year-old Mikhail Sholokhov worked programatica Karginskaya of the revolutionary Committee. According to various reports, whether during the battle, or during the exploration of the situation Makhnovists, Sholokhov was captured. Young prodelec behaved with Makhno quite boldly, answered without proper respect, for that he was shot. Only the intercession of local residents and Sholokhov’s youth were the reason for softening Nestor Makhno, who ordered the young man to let go.
There were several versions of the meeting between Mikhail Sholokhov and Nestor Makhno, but there was no official confirmation or refutation of this fact.
Ordered to shoot
Mikhail Sholokhov was always uncomfortable. He was too straightforward and sincere in communicating not only with his relatives, but also with people outside, often occupying high positions.
It was the writer’s straightforwardness that constantly threatened his life. According to the daughter of the writer Maria Mikhailovna, the father always sharply criticized the methods of work of the NKVD. He was deeply indignant at the torture of people and the coercion of the interrogated to self-incriminate. This is what Mikhail Sholokhov wrote a letter to Joseph Stalin in the hope that justice will prevail.
As a result, a criminal case against the writer himself was prepared. There was a whole plan to eliminate the writer. He was to be accused of counter-revolutionary activities, arrested and shot allegedly while trying to escape from custody.
In 1938 he was arrested at his home, in the village of Veshenskaya, but the writer was not found. Home testified: Sholokhov went hunting for a few days. In fact, the writer was already in Moscow, where together with Rostov chekist Ivan Pogorelov was waiting for an invitation to an audience with Stalin.
Mikhail Sholokhov was warned about the impending arrest and execution of Pogorelov, to whom the leaders of the Rostov NKVD Grechukhin and Kogan gave the order to liquidate the writer. Ivan Pogorelov Sholokhov warned, and they at one time, but separately, went to the capital where within two weeks waited for the decision of the fate.
At a meeting with Stalin was present and Rostov, the KGB, and the NKVD leadership of the country. As a result, Sholokhov and Pogorelov were released in peace. What caused the “mercy” of Joseph Stalin, it is not known. However, the fact remains that even after this incident Sholokhov did not stop writing to the first head about the Holodomor and mockery of people.
According to the testimony of Olga Kondrashova, a member of the crew of the Rostov newsreel, the third attempt on the life of the writer told the widow of Mikhail Sholokhov Maria Petrovna.
Maria Sholokhova told how the head of the OGPU Heinrich Grigorievich Yagoda invited her husband to visit her. The conversation was supposed to be informal. Berry immediately indicated: they just talk, but drink a glass. An open bottle of vodka and a simple snack in the form of sprats were already prepared in the office.
However, after waiting for Sholokhov to drink, Berry his glass set aside, citing ill health. Then the head of the OGPU quickly said goodbye and called the driver, who was supposed to take the writer.
Already in the car Sholokhov began to have stomach pains, the driver quickly took Mikhail Alexandrovich to the hospital of the OGPU. According to the writer’s widow, the only thing that saved him was that he did not sign the consent to the operation, having caught in the eyes of one of the female doctors a silent request to refuse surgery.
