Three marriages of Lyudmila Ulitskaya: How divorce helped the famous writer to find herself
Lyudmila Ulitskaya needs no introduction for a long time. She is called one of the most widely read writers of our time, her books have been translated into almost 30 languages, she has a lot of national and international literary awards, and the bibliography has more than two dozen books. Lyudmila Ulitskaya, perhaps, would never have taken up the pen, if not for the difficult divorce, from which she came out with some experience and a desire to change her life.
Lyudmila Ulitskaya for two years met with a very nice, but too insecure person. They still have a warm relationship. But then, in his youth, the young man knew: he absolutely does not fit a girl like Ludmilla. Two years in a row he repeated the same name: Yuri Taits. It was him, his former classmate, he considered a suitable candidate for his girlfriend.
Yuri Taits grew up in a professorial family, studied in Phys-tech, was a master of sports in Boxing and wore almost the first jeans in the capital. Lyudmila Ulitskaya and Yuri Taits met by chance in the Crimea, being on the same beach in Koktebel. For two years she really had to get used to the fact that she needed this man, but because the novel was swift, and the marriage is inevitable.
Unfortunately, the student marriage was short-lived. They were both not yet ready to start a family, and did not really understand what it was. They loved each other, but could not figure out who played the first violin in the family. Everyone was trying to prove their supremacy.
Yuri Taits and Lyudmila Ulitskaya lived together for five years, got a divorce and after a while became real friends. Unfortunately, the first husband of the writer very early passed away, which was a real great loss for Lyudmila Ulitskaya.
After graduating from the biofak MSU Lyudmila Ulitskaya worked in the laboratory at the Institute of General genetics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where she met her second husband, Mikhail Evgeniev. They were both promising scientists, Michael did not question the talent of his clever young wife and did not even claim the palm when their family life began. However, in 1970 Lyudmila Ulitskaya had to quit her job.
First, my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and the young woman provided her with proper care. When my mother died, came to light Alexei, the eldest son of Lyudmila Ulitskaya and Mikhail’s book, and three years later, in 1975, was born Peter.
During the nine years that the woman spent at home, caring for her mother and raising children, her husband managed to defend not only the candidate, but also a doctoral dissertation. And the relationship between the spouses gradually changed. Mikhail Borisovich saw himself as a luminary of science, and his wife as a housewife, who is obliged to provide him with a strong rear, take care of the economy and raise children.
However, Lyudmila Ulitskaya with this state of things be tolerated not wanted. She knew she could do better. The decision to divorce her was not easy, but she imagined only two scenarios.
Lyudmila Evgenievna could have stayed with her husband, resigned to her humiliating, as it seemed to her, position of an intelligent housewife, who is given money for expenses and allowed to maintain the house at her own discretion.
And she could leave her husband with two small children and try to build her life anew. It should be understood that by the time the divorce process began, she could no longer work in her specialty, since in nine years science has stepped far forward.
And yet Lyudmila Ulitskaya decided not to create the illusion of a family, but to create herself anew. She was ready to go to work as a simple laboratory assistant in the hospital, but fate has prepared for her a very different way. Today his second divorce Lyudmila Ulitskaya calls one of the most powerful acts in her life.
A Union of equals
Lyudmila Evgenievna is silent about the circumstances of acquaintance with her third husband, sculptor Andrei Krasulin. We only know that it took place before the future writer decided to divorce.
According to her, the novel was difficult and the official marriage was the least likely outcome. That’s why she thought she could only rely on herself.
She was lucky: at that moment she paid a visit to a friend who served as an artist in the Jewish theater. At the same time there was Yuri Sherling, the Creator and artistic Director of the theater. Struck by erudition and well-read new friend, he immediately invited her to become head of the literary part of the theater. Three days later, Lyudmila Ulitskaya agreed to his proposal. In the theater, she began to take her first steps in creativity, writing articles. The first book of Lyudmila Ulitskaya will be published when the writer is already 50 years old.
Andrei Krasulin was the man who helped the writer to be born. Lyudmila Ulitskaya admits: the presence of her husband next to her, with his irrepressible and inexhaustible creative energy allowed her to swing to those heights that she could not even dream of before. At the same time, the husband never allowed himself to put the wife’s personality lower than his own.
The main leitmotif in their relationship is the inner freedom to try the unknown. And self-confidence, and the desire to put their forces in a new direction came from this very freedom.
They have been together for many years, they have gone through a lot and experienced a lot. But today Lyudmila Ulitskaya and Andrey Krasulin are still interesting to each other. They are ready to discuss interesting topics for hours or just watch how a loved one works. As Lyudmila Ulitskaya says, their life is “joint in the full sense of the word.”
