Irina Erenburg and she Paleeva: Wonderful story of mutual rescue the daughter of a famous writer and girls, nearly shot by the Nazis

The fate of Irina Erenburg and Feiga Fishman unthinkable way crossed in a time of war. The adult woman and the teenage girl by then already both knew bitterness of losses, each of them had the vital drama. They were not always easy with each other, but Irina Ehrenburg and her adopted daughter Fania were mutual salvation for each other and were able to warm up souls in their small family.

Irina Ehrenburg

She was born in nice as a result of not too long novel by Ilya Ehrenburg and Catherine Schmidt. Irina was still a baby when her mother decisively broke off relations with her father and went to their mutual friend Tikhon Sorokin. However, Ilya Ehrenburg himself admitted later that he grieved about this for a short time. Catherine has maintained with former lover is quite a friendly relationship and even secret from their parents, with whom the family lived at one time near Petrograd, brought the daughter to him at the meeting.

Father came to them rarely has, but always sought to feed daughter, and from France, where he then lived, constantly sent bright and unusual gifts: watercolor paint, smelling honey and utterly white flour flavored.

She was 12 years old when her father took her to France, where she lived for the next 10 years, graduated from the Sorbonne, received a diploma of psychologist. And then she returned to Soviet Russia and could not work in her specialty: applied psychology was declared almost outlawed.

Then Irina Ehrenburg began to translate, and soon married a talented and strong Boris Lapin. He wrote poetry and prose, traveled a lot around the country, and in the war years became a journalist. Irina Was incredibly happy. In 1940, Ilya Ehrenburg returned to the Soviet Union, Irina and her husband began to live with her father and his wife Lyubov Kozintseva.

And then the war began. Boris Lapin became a special correspondent of the “red star” and died in an environment near Kiev, along with his friend and colleague Zakhar Khatsrevin.

Irina refused to put up with the bitterness of loss. She is very long did not believe in the death of her husband, she waited and waited for his return. She was ready to see him helpless, the blind, the deaf, – any, only the living. But the miracle did not happen. Irina seemed to have fallen into their grief. And throughout the war, she kept a diary in which chronologically accurate record of everything that happened around her.

Fanya (Feige Fishman)

Feiga was born in a large and friendly Jewish family. When fascists came, for data on Jews informers received salt. Two kilos in one human life. A neighbor of the Fishman family received six at once: on his denunciation were killed mother Fanny and Riva with Basia – her sisters.

Fania remembered vaguely how she had escaped. She was taken in by a family of Christians-Baptists, which was grown by another five children. It became known as Christina and strictly forbidden to remember his real name. And towards the end of the war the girl was a partisan, then took it and got to serve at pharmaceutical warehouse at the hospital. One of the servants-trendy braided her braid in a braid and called orderly without shoulder straps.

Rahman Naumovich Seltsovsky, who took the girl from the guerrilla group, wrote a letter to the Jewish anti-Fascist Committee, where he told the sad story of the rescued girl. Ilya Ehrenburg, who received this letter, was so impressed that he collected a large parcel with textbooks and books, accompanied by a letter for Fanny.

When the hospital began to move with the advancing Soviet troops to the West, the chief surgeon wrote to Ehrenburg about the need to deliver the girl to the rear. And then in the apartment of Ilya Ehrenburg, the phone rang, and he happily ordered, that brought Fania urgently carried to him.

Happy ending

At first they all lived together: Ilya Grigoryevich Love to my wife Mikhailovna, Irina, and Fania, who was then thirteen years (the exact date of his birth, the girl didn’t remember). At the end of the war in the apartment Ehrenburg guests appeared, Ephraim and Joseph Fishman, older brothers Fani. Both fought, Ephraim first partisan, then served in the Polish army, Joseph was originally in the red army. They were going to Palestine and wanted to take their sister with them.

Fania didn’t think too long. She consulted with Irina, but she did not want to put pressure on the girl and offered her to make an independent choice. Fania stayed. Irina was too lonely and sad.

Fania wanted to adopt Ilya Ehrenburg with his wife, and then in 1947 Irina began to live separately from his father, and Fania went after her. Irina was adopted by a rescued girl. And escaped, thus, itself from melancholy and loneliness. They both found a family.
It was not always easy for them. But they sought common ground, learned to hear and understand each other. Fania grew up, graduated from medical school, became a nephrologist. She married and had a daughter, naming her after her adoptive mother. Irina-the youngest gave birth to two daughters, Anna and Luba. Irina Ehrenburg later say: she raised three generations.

But her fate could have been much sadder if not for the newfound daughter. In the late 1980s, fan decided to move to Israel, but constantly flew to Moscow to take care of Irina, support her and protect her. And bring your garden fragrant small strawberries.

Each of them had a complex character. But they knew what it was like to lose loved ones. And all my life trying not to lose each other.
