Why Dumas distorted the story of the real “count of Monte Cristo” and hid who he really was
The writer Alexander Dumas was a very prolific and successful author. His novels were read by many generations in all countries of the world. Where did he get the stories for his works? In fact, Dumas did not invent the main thing – the basis of the novel, which is usually found in historical notes, archives and memoirs. But then, putting his considerable imagination, he turned the usual story into an exciting narrative.
History of the novel
So it was with “the Count of Monte Cristo”. Dumas found in the bowels of the police archives one criminal history. And put it in the basis of a new novel. The name Monte Cristo is the name of an island in the Mediterranean sea. When Dumas traveled to those parts, he heard a local legend, according to which the island buried countless treasures. So the name of the island and the legend of the treasure combined in one story.
It should be noted that this novel was one of the most successful, and perhaps the most successful among all the works of Dumas. It many times filmed, staged theatrical and television productions, wrote the continuation and emulation. So it is difficult to find among the reading public a person who is not familiar with the name of the count of Monte Cristo.
The plot of the narrative is well known. Recall briefly: the young sailor Dantes was denounced imprisoned in the fortress, for life. If it had not been for his neighbour, Abbot Faria, Dantes would have gone mad or died. But the Abbot gave him hope.
Just Dantes spent in fortress 14 years, and then managed to escape. During this time, the Abbot was able to share with the young man his extensive knowledge in many fields of science, history and culture. So out of the fortress came not illiterate sailor, and educated, almost worldly man. Which gave him the opportunity to impersonate the count.
Also Abbot, by logical reasoning and detailed questioning, managed to get to the truth: who betrayed Dantes and why. And before he died, he gave the ward the coordinates of the hidden treasures.
So Dantes was free, rich, independent, armed with knowledge. And he began to take revenge on his enemies.
The true story of “the count»
The real story of the prototype is not so colorful and dizzying. Although Dumas was a bit wrong. The whole plot remained almost the same as in the police story. Added only more colorful details and breathtaking adventures.
Francois Picot was a poor shoemaker. He had a bride whom he was about to marry. Poor Pico was not lucky: his friend the innkeeper named Luppian himself wanted to marry this girl. The innkeeper and three of his friends wrote a denunciation that Pico was spying against Napoleon. A young man came to the fortress for 7 years. There he sat with the Prelate, who bequeathed him a cache of money. The Prelate died, and Pico were released: Napoleon was deposed and a prisoner just released.
Unlike the book count Pico did not become a brilliant and educated man, and turned into a gloomy subject, obsessed only with revenge. The truth of his arrest, he had to learn himself. Joining the right of inheritance and received the money bequeathed, Pico sought out his former friend by the name of allyu. Promises for the truth about the arrest of a valuable ring, he pretended to be his own roommate, saying that Francois died in prison. ALLU didn’t recognize the former friend in this gloomy and aged person and told who and why wrote a denunciation.
Pico went to an expensive restaurant, which is now owned Luppian. The former bride-to-Pico, the groom, after waiting 2 years, married married Loupian. Soon one of the informants was found murdered with a dagger, the second was poisoned. The restaurant burned down, the traitor’s daughter was dishonored, and the son was involved in a gang of thieves, for which he was imprisoned for many years. Ex-fiancée died of grief, after some time, and the Loupian stabbed.
But the story is not over. Allyu, as it turned out, had sold the ring, and then kill the buyer and fled with the money and the ring. At the same time he guessed that Pico had not died, but had arranged all these deaths and misfortunes. ALLU began to follow his former friend and managed to lure him to the basement, where he tried to find out from him the location of his treasures. But the prisoner said nothing and was killed. The killer fled to England. There, before he died, he told the whole incredible story to the priest. The priest wrote it down and sent it to France. Historian Jacques Pesce later discovered this document in the police archives and published it. And already Dumas, having read the story, put it in the basis of his novel.
Dumas less guilty heroes still got a shot at redemption, though, and were punished. In full least retaliation swept up by only the most inveterate scoundrels, which died. The rest, including the daughter and son of the chief informer, remained alive and free, then the count of Monte Cristo showed mercy to the innocent. And his ex-girlfriend is still alive. The count himself, sated with revenge, got a chance at a happy personal life with her daughter annenskogo Pasha.
By the way, the absolute certainty that the story of Francois Picaud – genuine, researchers have no.
